  • Execunet. Counsel in administrative and appellate cases that opened competition in long distance telephone communications.
  • Airline Pilot and Flight Engineer Cases. Lead counsel in cases breaking age-based mandatory retirement rules for pilots and flight engineers. Successfully argued two of the cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, obtaining unanimous decisions. Another case, tried to a jury over eight weeks, yielded the then-largest award in an age discrimination (ADEA) case, $18.0 million.
  • MCI v. AT&T. Trial and appellate counsel in case resulting in then-largest jury award in an antitrust case, $1.8 billion.
  • Retiree Health Care. For 10 years represented over 84,000 salaried retirees in the largest ERISA case, which sought to extend promises of employer-provided retiree health care. Named one of the nation’s Top Employee Benefits Lawyers in National Law Journal survey.
  • USAirways Bankruptcy. Lead outside trial counsel for government agency (PBGC) in successful claim for over $2.0 billion in unfunded pension liabilities.
  • USAID Age Discrimination. Lead counsel for worldwide class of Senior Foreign Service Officers claiming age discrimination in a reduction in force (RIF). After a three-week trial, the case settled for $5.5 million.
  • FBI Race and Sex Discrimination. Trial counsel for highest ranking African American female FBI agent claiming race and sex discrimination, and retaliation. Jury returned verdict of $500,000, and case settled.
  • Prevailing Wages. Co-counsel in “prevailing wage” cases for lost wages on public works projects. Cases resulted in settlements of nearly $20.0 million. 
  • Secret Service Perjury Case. Represented as co-counsel the Director of the U.S. Secret Service Laboratory charged with perjury for testimony he gave on behalf of the U.S. government in the Martha Stewart case. The trial resulted in a not guilty verdict for the Lab Director.
